Just a bit about myself before I get to the review- I don’t like survival-horror games for the most part. I only beat Resident Evil 0 and Code Veronica, I barely played RE4 and only seen seconds of the demo of RE5. Also, I’ve only played the Mercenaries for like… Minutes on RE4, and didn’t care for it. And in all honesty, I really just wanted to see Jill‘s butt in 3D.

So to make this clear, this is a review of Resident Evil from a guy who doesn’t like Resident Evil all too much, and only bought  it to see Jill’s ass. That all being said, here’s my review!

Set in the Resident Evil universe, Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D will deliver relentless action with players competing against the clock to defeat as many enemies as possible in a fixed time. Featuring Mercenaries missions from Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5, now fully realised in stunning 3D, Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D will add brand new modes and well known characters from the series to enrich and extend the Mercenaries experience. Furthermore, the title will take advantage of the Nintendo 3DS WiFi Connectivity, allowing players from around the world to join forces in co-op gameplay, regardless of location.

See that definition above? That is exactly what you’ll get. Kill as many as you can before time runs out.

Now for another tangent; you see, I’ve noticed a lot of people reviewing it on things that have nothing to do with the game. For the uneducated consumer who only has little money to spend on games, they may just look at the score it’s given and think “feh, I shan’t waste mah pennies on this rubbish!”. It makes it seem as if the game is really poor when it isn’t.

Does it have a story? NO. Did it say it had one? No. So.. Why are people reviewing it on that? Do we review Tetris poorly for having no story? No, because it never claimed to have one. It’s all about getting the highest score.

Also, I hear complaints about the sound. I don’t see the problem (quite possibly because aural problems can’t be perceived visually), and the game prompts you to use headphones. I don’t quite need it, because it sounds fine. You hear music, groans and explosions.

The game came packaged with a ‘special feature’ which was a demo of an up-and-coming RE title that allowed you to play as Jill in 3D! So.. My dream came true! I got to see Jill’s butt in 3D!

I would sell it right there, but.. If I did, how would I review it? I played it for a few days and found myself loving it! Regardless of how I feel about RE, this game feels like an arcade shooter that you’d play with a friend. I tend to get SS rank on everything, but that’s because I’m awesome ^^ the gameplay is fun, and that’s all it is.

I especially love Rebecca, not just because of her physical appearance, but because of her physical appearance. Wait.. I just dig brunettes. Bite me.

Anywho, it’s exactly what it says it is: The Mercenaries. You kill as many zombies as you can as fast as you can with friends or a random player online. If you like killing zombies, buy this. The only issue I see is that you can’t clear the save on the cartridge (which isn’t a big deal, but it would be nice if someone who bought it used could see their own scores in the game..) and that there isn’t a global leaderboard. In a game where the whole goal is the get the best score possible, why isn’t there a leaderboard?

As for the controls: I didn’t know how to play, but learned fast enough. It’s easy to figure out.

Just get it. It’s a fun way to kill time . It’s like $30 online. Just pop it in, kill some zombies, shut the 3DS off and go to sleep.

I like it. The people who didn’t like it should’ve read the description of the game. ^^;

Dead or Alive Dimensions review

I’ll sum up how I feel with a simple photo. I believe the folks at Epic Meal Time say it best.

That’s fuckin’ smart, DOA. You know what else is fucking smart? Pretty promotional / cover artwork. Don’t know who the artist is, but they’re fucking smart.

“DEAD OR ALIVE Dimensions takes the vivacious characters and locales that have made the DOA franchise a hit with gamers everywhere and presents them in eye-popping 3D. All of the punches, kicks, counters and holds that have defined the series as a top-tier fighter are present for the first time on a portable gaming system – the Nintendo 3DS®. DEAD OR ALIVE Dimensions features some of the best content from the series spanning all of the titles from the original DOA up to DOA 4.”

Kickass description? That’s smart.

Dead or Alive Dimensions features the largest roster of playable characters of any DOA game so far. Characters. Characters, MORE characters; that’s fuckin’ smart, DOA.

From left to right, and top to bottom:

Kasumi, Hayabusa, Lisa (La Mariposa), Tina, Bayman, Helena, Zack, Leon, Gen Fu, Jann Lee, Hitomi, Hayate, Ayane

Raidou, Tengu, ALPHA-152, Bass, Christie, Kokoro, Random/Shiden, Brad Wong, Eliot, Liefang, Ein, Kasumi α, and Genra.

Yes, you can use ALL of the bosses, AND Hayate/Kasumi’s father Shiden (who is my main nowadays). Fucking smart.

Hold on, haters. Are you saying “Hey, I heard that it has touch screen combos! That’s fucking stupid!” No, that’s not fucking stupid, that’s fucking smart. Once you touch start the move, you can’t stop the combo. Since Dead or Alive works in triangles (strike beats grab, grab beats hold, hold beats strike) they can punish you viciously for attempting it. If they misjudge your timing- throw them. That’s smart.

Haters also complain about the D-Pad and analog stick. Here’s my take on that: my thumbs can adapt to any D-pad, cause they’re smart. I understand that my opponent can’t plug in an arcade stick, and that makes me smile.

I don’t use analog, so I tried a simple move with it. I pulled off something like a [214, 1236, throw] with Alpha-152 with relative ease. It’s smooth~

It works, and remember; everyone you play uses it too. Get used to it, be smart.

Speaking of smart, let’s talk about ethnic diversity. Characters look a little more less “anime-ish”, and a little more human. Asians look asian, Americans look like.. shit. Kidding XD

The eyes look smaller. I noticed more facial details than in previous titles, such as Ayane’s eyebrow color. Kasumi’s (who is a redhead) uncle Raidou (who has black hair) raped her mother (who is a redhead/brunette. I can’t tell), and somehow a purple haired kid came out? Oh no no no, that’s not right. She dyes it purple. Did I know that before now? No, cause they didn’t put this much attention into such fine details until now.  If you look VERY close, the clothing looks pixelated, but since I’m not looking that close- it looks great. Also- Brad looks like more of a degenerate drunk.

Oh, so you’re thinking- “It’s a great game, I guess. How does the online play work?”. Well, as I was writing this brilliant fucking article, a spot pass gave me a Jann Lee outfit. Free DLC, downloaded while in sleep mode. Was I aware of this? No, it just happens when I walk past some wifi. This tends to happen daily. I don’t complain because (you guessed it) it’s fucking smart.

Playing online works. It works. Generally lag free, well- no input lag, even against players across the sea. That’s smart.

Oh yeah, story mode spans ALL DOA games, and makes it make sense. It hints to a sequel, looking forward to Dead or Alive 5?  I am, after I’m done whipping you all in Soul Calibur 5~ :3

If you want Samus to blow this bad boy away, blow your 3DS. (Seriously, blow it.)

Oh yeah, the score. People like scores- how about a “that’s fucking smart” out of 5? If you have a 3DS, and enjoy a fast paced fighter, you may as well pick it up. In my humble opinion, it’s the best that Dead or Alive has to offer! Get it, because you’re fucking smart.
