“Catherine” sorta-review, kinda.

I’m amazed that this game was localized, I’ll admit. I really didn’t think we’d get this title, and was ready to import. It seemed too ‘weird’ for our audience, too dark. I HAD to buy this thing as soon as it arrived in the stores (with the artbook and CD, of course) and didn’t have the patience to grab the super spiffy special edition (Mail takes too long, I need it NAAAO!).

I’m only 4 stages in so far, and I’m loving it. I don’t play it all in one sitting, so it’s taking me a long time to get through it. Every week or so, I play just a bit~

The game breaks down like this: interact with your pals, go to bed, FIGHT FOR YOUR LIFE in a Q-Bert esque series of block puzzles. I like this, I like it a lot. It seems intimidating, but the game teaches you as you go along. The music is amazing, the graphics appeal to me, and the tone is… Dark. If you’re a fan of “Iron Tager” from BlazBlue, you’ll find it amusing how often that voice actor pops up here.

As Vincent, a man recently succumbed to the irresistible beauty of the game’s titular diversion, players find themselves swept into a treacherous love triangle. Catherine’s core themes those of free will, of the delicate nature of relationships and the choices we make within them, marry perfectly with the intense, terrorfilled gameplay that serves to accurately reflect Vincent’s growing sense of anxiety. It is an experience wholly unlike any to come before it, and is certain to leave gamers talking and thinking about Vincent’s tribulations long after the credits have rolled.

Relationships are scary! As you’ll see in the demo, you start off by sleeping with the blonde Catherine, and spend the rest of (well, at least up to where I’m playing) explaining it to your girlfriend. It’s scary because I’ve never been in a situation like this (cheating on someone), so I don’t know what to do. The bosses have something to do with the situation Vince found himself in the night before, and I won’t spoil any of it for you- well.. Except for this second one. Since you’re already aware of the cheating part- the boss you fight is a giant ass/crotch with that shoots hearts from it’s… um.. Here’s a photo.

I can’t wait to finish this game, because it’s ridiculous!
